Let's first ask "Why use disposable nappies?"
Have you given that question much thought at all? For many people the idea of having a baby is synonymous with buying jumbo packs of nappies from the supermarket. In today's hectic throwaway society we are overlooking a very easy way of reducing waste and protecting the environment for our children.
According to a recent study* disposable nappies now account for 2.5% of household waste - that’s 400,000 tonnes a year. It is estimated that each disposable nappy will take over 200 years to decompose - and that is before you seal it in a plastic nappy bag.
I chose cloth nappies for Rebecca initially to do my bit to reduce the landfill waste. Then I realized that I would rather wear cotton pants than paper ones filled with an absorbent gel. Why should I expect her to wear something that I wouldn’t?
We all know that a baby's skin is more sensitive than that of an adult so it makes sense to use soft natural fibres against baby's skin wherever possible.
Modern cloth nappies now come in such a wide variety of shapes, sizes and materials that you are sure to find a range to fit both your budget and your little - one’s bottom. They are easily washed at 60°C and can be tumbled or line dried. You will not be buying nappies every week and could save in excess of £500 over the period that your child is in nappies. Plus you’ll be able to use them for baby number two…..
