They come in different sizes?
Yes, just as disposable nappies come in a variety of sizes to fit from birth through to potty, real nappies are also sized to give a good fit. As real nappies are more adjustable than disposables you will find that you need just two, or possibly three nappy sizes throughout the period that your child is in nappies.

You could always use a "one-size" nappy which is designed to fit from birth through to potty. It folds over itself to fit a newborn and then as your child grows, boosters can be used for added absorbency. This has the advantage that you only need to buy one set of nappies, but they can be bulky on newborn babies.

The sizing does vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, some using small/medium/large terminology and some using size 1, 2 and 3. Some brands start with a newborn or size 0 nappy from 5lbs to 12lbs, whilst others start at small or size 1 to fit from 8 lbs.

As a general rule:
Size 1 is a "small" and would fit baby from 8lbs to 18lbs.
Size 2 is a "medium" and would fit baby from 15lbs to 32lbs.
Size 3 is a "large" and would fit from 28lbs to 45lbs.
Some manufacturers also offer the "extra large" to cater for the older bedwetter.

A lot of children will be able to use the size1/small from birth to 6 months or so, then move into the size 2/medium until potty trained, only using the size 3/large nappy as a night nappy from then on. If you have a small baby, you may find it possible to jump from the size 0/newborn into the size 2/medium at around 6 months.

Please note - there is more to fit than just the weight - some nappies work best on a slender child, whilst others do not grip as tightly round the legs so are better for a chunkier baby. This is why I think it is important not only to read up and ask for advice but to try some nappies on your child, either using the hire packs or during a demonstration.

So now you know about nappy sizes you also need to know about the wrap sizes.
